Somalian immigrants face many challenges
By Chad Klimack

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BLACKLICK -- Imagine one day packing your bags, buying an airline ticket and moving to Somalia. Once you crossed the Atlantic, you would need to adjust to a foreign language, a different climate, strange foods, new cultural mores and more.

That is what many of the Somalian immigrants now living in the area have to cope with on a daily basis. They also have to find work, support themselves and secure an education for their children. It can be difficult, said Asili Omar, who moved from Somalia to the United States 11 years ago.

"It's not easy when you come here," said Omar, 35, who lived in Washington, D.C., before moving to Columbus.

Today, Omar lives in Blacklick with her family. And while she feels comfortable living in the United States, she still faces new challenges on a daily basis.

One challenge is finding work. Omar recently lost her job, and she is struggling to find a new one because she never received an "American" education.

"I've never been to school," Omar said. "I'm self taught. I went to the library and learned."

Omar wants to go to school, but she said she cannot find any adult education classes in the area. Hence, she has had a difficult time building her resume and attracting employers.

Local Somalian residents face another hurdle whenever they want to go to church. Omar is Muslim, and she said she has to drive to the north side of Columbus to find a Muslim church.

Still, Omar said she is happy living in Blacklick. People have not shunned her because of the way she looks -- like many Muslim woman, Omar wears a head scarf -- and they have treated her son and daughter with respect.

"It's my experience that American people are very friendly," Omar said.

Omar is particularly happy with the education her daughter is receiving at Summit Primary. The district offers an English as a Second Language program, and school officials have tried to accommodate students from other countries, particularly those from Somalia.

For example, most Muslims abstain from eating pork, so Licking Heights uses a menu that lists pork products. Licking Heights also allows Muslim students to miss school for Islamic holidays, and Somalian girls are allowed to observe their religion by wearing head scarves. By contrast, a school in Muskogee, Okla., suspended a student in 2003 for wearing a head scarf.

Licking Heights seventh-grader Faduma Farah, 13, regularly wears a head scarf to school, and Farah said she appreciates the fact the school honors her religious beliefs.

"Some people ask why I wear it, but they don't treat me different," Farah said.

Aside from her head scarf, Farah looks like most other students at Licking Heights. One day earlier this week, she wore a stylish jeans jacket and a long dress to school and carried a flashy, black purse. She also works hard in class and enjoys joking with her peers.

However, Farah said she did not always feel so comfortable living in the United States. When she first moved to the country seven years ago, she could not speak English, and she struggled to fit in.

"It was hard at first, but it got easier over time," Farah said.

Jody McRainey works at Waggoner Grove, the Blacklick development where almost all local Somalian families live, and McRainey understands why Licking Heights has worked so hard to accommodate Farah and other Somalian students.

"They've had this small school district, and then we built this very large complex on Waggoner Road. There has been some culture shock," said McRainey, noting as many as 300 Somalian children live at Waggoner Grove.

Officials at Waggoner Grove have tried to help Licking Heights by offering English classes and other support services, such as job placement, to Somalian residents.

"Hopefully, folks in the school district will not be panicked by the growth in the school district. They'll embrace it." said Terry Alton, who also works at Waggoner Grove.

Alton has two elementary-aged children, both of whom go to Licking Heights. The pair have Somalian classmates, and they enjoy going to school with them, Alton said.

"They're just like any other kid," she said. "This is a fantastic opportunity to have an influence on our children, show them we have a very diverse country."

Omar cannot speak for the other ethnic groups who live in the area or attend Licking Heights, but she said Somalians are giving, kind people who can be a benefit to any community.

Alton agreed. She said an elderly Somalian woman moved to Waggoner Grove not too long ago, and the woman could not speak English and had no possessions.

The other Somali residents soon came to her aid, however.

"The people in this community bought her furniture, pots, pans, forks, everything," said Alton, adding the incident illustrated the emphasis the Somali culture places on respect and selflessness.

That emphasis currently is providing Omar with some comfort as she searches for a new job.

"Somalian people, they help each other," she said. "They baby-sit each other, work with each other; that's our culture."

President hopes to reclaim ruined nation
By Benjamin Joffe-Walt
February 21, 2005

Somalia's President-in-exile is in a difficult spot. His administration has no buildings, no army, no budget. His country has been without a government for 14 years, and as its leader he cannot even enter the capital as it is too dangerous. These are the shoes of the new Somali President, Abdullahi Yusuf, but many say he is the country's only hope.

In 1991 Somali militias joined forces to oust the dictator Mohamed Siad Barre. Ever since, Somalia has been ruled by warring groups who have divided the country into small contested territories, the character of which was captured in the film Black Hawk Down. That movie documented a botched US raid in the capital, Mogadishu, where 18 US troops were killed, leading to the withdrawal of American forces from the country.

The conflict has killed more than half a million people and displaced more than 750,000.

Mr Yusuf has lived in exile in Kenya since he was elected last year, but despite calls for war from militia leaders and with little foreign aid or military support, he is making bold claims of returning to his anarchic country within weeks.

AdvertisementThe Government says they will begin returning to Mogadishu immediately, but there are many doubts it will ever happen without a war. This month officials from the new administration succeeded in getting warlords to hand over the presidential palace, the Mogadishu port and some government buildings.

But 12 days ago a government delegation was shot at and a BBC journalist shot dead a few hours after arriving in Mogadishu. A Muslim cleric reportedly threatened any foreigner entering the city; there were rumours of $US5000 ($6300) rewards for anyone who kills a white person; and the new Housing Minister, Osman Ali Ato, called for war if Mr Yusuf used foreign troops to retake Mogadishu, showing division within the Government over foreign intervention.

In an interview with the Herald, Mr Yusuf said: "We have no reason to be afraid of our neighbours. They organised the peace process and they are the godfathers of this Government."

Accused by his adversaries of being overly friendly with Ethiopia, Mr Yusuf argued: "We need international help. We don't have proper police, military or security forces. Without international support our job will be difficult. Everyone knows that."

A known haven for international crime, smuggling rings and terrorists (al-Qaeda is being hunted by the US in northern Somalia), Mr Yusuf is sure to face significant resistance to governance of any kind, and with more than 50,000 well-armed militia members in the country and warlords gearing up for battle, Somalia's new government may have little chance of success without significant military help from other African countries. Mr Yusuf originally requested 15,000 troops from the 53-nation African Union to help regain control of his country, but so far he has only 2000.

"How much forces they will provide I don't know, but whatever they send it will be needed," Mr Yusuf said.

Some Somali leaders have criticised Mr Yusuf as a poor negotiator, arguing that the former warlord is too militaristic to bring peace.

"Over 90 per cent of the Somali population wants peace," he said. "Those who are refusing are bad people, and we don't listen to them."

Even with foreign troops protecting him, Mr Yusuf's own safety is in question after his residence was attacked recently.

"I have fought forever, I've given my life to my country, and I am not afraid."

Sanadguuradii 23 ee Dhalintii UFFO
By 911 (C I A)

CELEBRATE FEBRUARY 20,2005

20kii Feebaraayo 2005, waxay ku beegan tahay sadex iyo labaatan guuradii kasoo wareegtay markii xabsiga loo taxaabay geesiyaashii aqoonyahanka ahaa ee loo yaqaanay UFFO oo dhacday 20kii Feebaraayo ee sanadkii 1982kii.

Anniversaries are great opportunities to celebrate our history . A thoughtful, well-defined anniversary campaign is an ideal opportunity to capture and communicate the values and philosophies that have made SOMALILAND successful.

Regardless of whether we will celebrate a 14th or even 23th anniversary, a landmark represents a major achievement, and certainly a time to celebrate accomplishments. In addition, we can use this opportunity to introduce our nation(SOMALILAND) to an new audience or, to expand our outreach or development efforts, to archive historical materials. Wherever we are we must celebrate and teach our childrens our history.

Here is a poem by Alexander Kimel- Holocaust Survivor

Do I want to remember, the creation of hell?

The shouts of the Raiders, enjoying the hunt.

Cries of the wounded, begging for life.

Faces of mothers carved with pain.

Hiding Children, dripping with fear.

No, I don't want to remember, but how can I forget?

Do I want to remember, my fearful return?

Families vanished in the midst of the day.

The mass grave steaming with vapor of blood.

Mothers searching for children in vain.

The pain of the ghetto, cuts like a knife.

No, I don't want to remember, but how can I forget?

Do I want to remember, the wailing of the night?

The doors kicked ajar, ripped feathers floating the air.

The night scented with snow-melting blood.

While the compassionate moon, is showing the way.

For the faceless shadows, searching for kin.

No, I don't want to remember, but I cannot forget.

Xuska Maalinta 20 February, Dhagax-tuurkii Ardayda Hargeysa Iyo Xadhigii UFFO: "Marnaba Ma Fileyn Wixii Maalintaa Dhacay" Axmed
Somaliland.Org -- Hargeisa, Somaliland -- 19 February, 2005
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Berrito oo bisha February tahay 20, waxay ku beegan tahay sannadguuradii 22aad ee ka soo wareegtay kacdoonkii dhagax-tuurka lahaa ee ay ku kaceen ardayda dugsiyada Hargeysa, 20 February 1982, iyaga oo ka dhiidhiyey xadhigii taliskii Milateri ee Soomaaliya xabsiga ugu taxaabay in kabadan 20 dhallinyaro aqoonyahanno reer Somaliland ah oo lagu magacaabi jirey UFFO. Waxaana lagu wadaa berrito in munaasibad ballaadhan oo xus ah loo sameeyo maalintaas.

Maalinta 20 February oo sannadkasta la xuso, waxa lagu xasuustaa xadhigii xabsiga dheer loogu taxaabay dhallinyaradii Aqoonyahannada ahaa ee UFFO oo iskood isugu abaabuley, isuguna xilqaamay inay si tabaruc ah wax uga qabtaan adeegga guud ee dadweynaha magaalada Hargeysa oo ay dowladdii Keli-taliska ahayd ay si xun u dayacday iyo mudaharaadkii ardayda dugsiyada Hargeysa ka sameeyeen 20kii February 1982 xarunta maxkamadda Hargeysa horteeda, halkaas oo maalintaa lagu saarayey dhallinyaradaas maxkamaddii Milateri ee Siyaad Barre, iyada oo ay ardaydu dhagax kala hortageen tawaangidii iyo hubkii cuslaa ee ciidamadii Siyaad Barre.

Waxaana maalinta 20ka February, loo qaatay maalin taariikhi ah oo u taagan bar-bilowga kacdoonkii iyo dhiidhigii shacbi ee curiyey halgankii hubaysnaa ee lagu ridey taliskii cadaadiska ee Siyaad Barre iyo qiimaha shacbiga Somaliland ku bixiyeen xorriyadda. Isla markaana waxa xuska maalintan la siyaartaa taallo maxkamadda Gobolka Hargeysa horteeda looga dhisay dhallinyaradii ardayda ahayd ee lagu diley kacdoonkaas.

Hase yeeshee, mid ka mid ah aqoonyahannadii UFFO ee la xidhxidhay, Mr. Axmed Muxumad Madar oo ka mid ah dadka qabanqaabinaya munaasibadda xuska ayaa ku baaqay sannadkan in maalinta 20ka February lagu daro maalmaha qaranka, si heer qaran ahna loo xuso.

Axmed, waxa uu sheegay in xuskii Sannadkii hore ee 2004 ay soo jeediyeen in maalintan lagu daro maalmaha qaranka, si heer qaran ahna loo xuso, balse ilaa iyo hadda xukuumaddu ka gaca jiidayso.

"Ummad waliba way xustaa, waanay xasuusan tahay taariikhdeeda. Ummad taariikhdeeda illowdeyna ama aan taariikh lahaynina run ahaantii ummaddaasi jaahwareer kama baxdo, sida sooyaalka taariikhdu ina farayo," ayuu yidhi Mr. Axmed Muxumad Madar.

"Taariikhdu waa waxa ummadda haga ee hoggaamiya, haddii ay xusi weydo ama xasuusan weydo taariikhdeeda ummadina dhibaato kama baxdo had iyo jeer. Waana ta maanta ina haysata runtii," ayuu raaciyey.

Mr. Madar oo saxaafadda uga warramay maalintaa iyo sidii wax u dhaceen, waxa uu sheegay inuu isagu ka mid ahaa dhallinyaradii wakhtigaa la xidhay ee xabsiga ku jirtey ee ardaydii dugsiyada, dhallinyaradii, haweenkii iyo dadweynihii reer Somaliland guud ahaan, gaar ahaan kuwa reer Hargeysa ay ka gilgisheen xadhigooda.

"Maalintaa iyada ah [20kii Febr. 1982] anigu waxaan ku jirey gacantii cadowga oo markaa ahaa taliskii dalka ka talinayey ee Faqashta. Waanu xidhnayn, waanu katiinadaysnayn," ayuu yidhi Axmed.

Isaga oo ka warramaya, sidii xadhigoodu u bilaabay, waxa uu sheegay Axmed Muxumed Madar in dhallinyaro uu ka mid ahaa oo la odhan jirey UFFO oo ahaa dhallinyarada magaalada Hargeysa wakhtigaa, isla markaana isugu jirey Macalimiin, dhakhaatiir iyo dhallinyaro kale oo aqoonyahanno ah ay isu abaabuleen inay si naftood-hurenimo ah ama mutadawacnimo ah uga shaqeeyaan dhibaatooyinkii markaa dalkooda iyo dadkooda haysatey, iyaga oo arkay in si badheedh ah loo dayacay adeegyadii guud. Dabadeedna bilaabay inay dadkooda u qabtaan wixii dowladdu u qaban weydey ee ay xaqa ugu lahaayeen, gaar ahaan dhinacyada waxbarashada, caafimaadka iyo adeegyada kale ee bulshada, dadkana ku baraarujiyaan inay iyagu waxqabsadaan ee aanay dowladda waxba ka sugin.

Waxa uu sheegay in dhallinyaradaasi ay hawshooda ka bilaabeen caafimaadka, iyaga oo wax ka qabtay cusbitaalka guud ee Hargeysa iyo Iskuulada oo ay xiisado ka geli jireen markii macalimiintii ku yaraatay, taas oo uu sheegay in dowladdii wakhtigaa jirtay ay u aragtay khatar iyo inay tahay arrin dadka ku kicinaysa dowladda.

Waxana uu sheegay in maalin maxkamadda la keenay dhallinyaradaas ay dadweynuhu gadood ka sameeyeen, dabadeedna uu dhacay dhagax-tuur ay iskaga horyimaaddeen ciidamadii la odhan jirey Xoogga Dalka ee dowladdii Soomaaliya, gaaskii ugu xoogga weynaa ee degganaa Hargeysa iyo duleedkeeda iyo dadweynihii Hargeysa oo fara madhan, waxa keliya ee ay siteenna uu ahaa Dhagax.

"Maalintaasi runtii waxay ahayd maalin taariikhda Somaliland aan odhan karo waa maalin mudan in loo aqoonsado maalin qaran. Waa maalin Somaliland dib ula soo noqoshada xornimadeeda bilowgeedii ahayd," ayuu yidhi.

Hase yeeshee, waxa uu sheegay in 20 ka mid ah 30kaa dhallinyarada ah lagu xukumay xabsi u dhexeeya 3 sannadood ilaa xabsi daa'in.

Waxa kale oo uu sheegay in gadoodkaa dadweynuhu wax ka beddelay qodobadii lagu soo oogey dhallinyaradaas oo dhammaan ciqaabtoodu ahayd "Dil", balse talisku ka fududeeyey markii uu arkay dareenka shacabka.

"Maalintaa 20 February, markii aan anigu ku jirey xadhiga ee rasaastii ugu horreysey ay dhacday ee aan maqlay, run ahaantii, marnaba ma aanan filaynin in dhiirranida intaa le'egi ay dhacayso, cabsidii dadkayga ku jirtey awgeed," ayuu yidhi Axmed Muxumad Madar, isagoo ka hadlaya dareenkiisu sida uu ahaa maalintaas.

"Marnaba maan filayn in dadkaygu ay ku kici karayaan wixii ay maalintaa ku kaceen marka la eego culayska saarnaa iyo sida loo cabsi geliyey dadka. Waxay igu noqotay wax riyo oo kale ah," ayuu raaciyey.

Waxana uu sheegay inuu weydiiyey rasaasta dhacaysa mid ka mid ah askartii Koofiyadcasta ahayd ee ilaalinaysey isaga, wuxuu iigu jawaabey ayuu yidhi "Jabhaddiinii baa soo gashay meesha".

Waxa uu sheegay maalintaa laga bilaabo ilaa intii maxkamaddoodu socotey in dhagaxtuurka iyo rasaastuba socotey, iyadoo gaasas ciidamo ahna magaalada lagu soo daayey oo ay gaafwareegayeen.

"Marnaba dadku ma muujin wax cabsi ah," ayuu yidhi. Waxana uu sheegay inuu dareemay in cabsidii beenta ahayd ee dadka lagu beeray ay baxday, baqdintii dhabta ahaydna ay ku ururtay daallinkii cududda been-beenta ah dadka ku cabsi gelinayey.

Ugu dambayntii Axmed Muxumad Madar, waxa uu dhallinyarada Somaliland inay kaalintooda ay ku leeyihiin horumarka bulshada iyo waxqabadkeeda ay u soo baxaan oo ay heegan u noqdaan.

"Maalintaa wixii laga dagaalamayey waxay ahayd maamulxumo, dulmi, xaq-darro iyo caddaalad-darro oo badheedhkaa loo galay oo naftaa loo huray," ayuu yidhi.

"Kuwii maalintaa laga dagaalamaya maantana way yaallaan, waanay jiraan. Dhallinyarada maanta waxaan ku baraarujinayaa inay mar walba isu taagaan waxay xaq u leeyihiin iyo xuquuqdooda. Inay bulshadooda ku baraarujiyaan dhibaatada haysata iyo cadaalad-darrada lagu samaynayo," ayuu yidhi Mr. Madar.

Waxana uu sheegay inay sidii dhallinyaradaa hore ee UFFO samaysay oo kale ay bulshadooda hormood ugu noqdaan, ku baraarujiyaan, ku wacyigeliyaan, kuna horkacaan inay noqdaan kuwo xuquuqdooda u taagan.

"Kuwo aan marnaba dulmi iyo xaqdarro iyo caddaalad-darro aan ogolaan, iyana aanay ku dhaqmin, maamulka waqtigaa u talinayana aanay ka aqbalin, ee ay noqdaan kuwo dadkooda dhibaatada ka saaray ayaan kula dardaarmayaa," ayuu Axmed Muxumad Madar ku soo gebagebeeyey hadalkiisa.

Worst of Somaliland drought is over
afrol News, 16 February - After more than three years of drought in eastern Somaliland, abundant and well distributed winter rains have led to excellent harvests. The region however still has to recover from the long drought and an estimated 500,000 people in Somaliland and Somalia remain in a state of food crisis.

According to the latest report on food security in Somalia and Somaliland by the agency Food Security Analysis Unit Somalia (FSAU), the "exceptionally good 2004/05 Deyr rains" have led to above average cereal production in most cropping areas. The Deyr rains are annual short rains between November and January that are of great importance to agriculture and livestock in the dry Horn region.

In Somaliland and neighbouring northern Somalia, the 2004/05 Deyr rains had ended the more than three year drought cycle in the region, FSAU says. In Somaliland, especially the troubled eastern Sool and Sanaag provinces - which are partly occupied by Somalia - had been hardest hit, but also the central Todgheer province in 2004 started to note the effects of the long drought.

Cumulative rainfall during this Deyr season had been 160 to 300 percent more than the normal rainfall performance in Somaliland and much of Somalia. Satellite photos had shown that the current vegetation cover is denser than usually at this time of year. The above normal rains had renewed the crippled pasture and water sources in pastoral and agricultural areas throughout the country. This was especially needed in Sool and Sanaag, where water sources for humans and livestock had dried up.

In Somaliland, two harvests are now above average. The Karan 2004 cereal production harvest, in December 2004, in the western, less drought-affected agro-pastoral provinces of Awdal, Galbeed and Togdheer had also been good. Harvests here were estimated at 17,100 metric tonnes, which is 117 percent of the post-war average, according to the FSAU report. Further, the post-Deyr harvests are set to be above average.

However, an estimated 500,000 people in Somalia and Somaliland "still remain in a state of humanitarian emergency or livelihood crisis," according to the definitions used in the FSAU report. These groups were said to "require immediate humanitarian assistance in the form of resource transfers and livelihood support," the report added.

The continued need for livelihood support in Somaliland and northern Somalia was due to the multiple shocks in this region. Eastern Somaliland had been victim to drought, freezing rains and armed conflict. Northern Somalia additionally had been locally hit by the December tsunami and flooding.

Combined with the extent of environmental degradation, cumulative livestock deaths, high levels of indebtedness and widespread destitution, this would lead to "a considerable lag time before most pastoralists will begin to recover." How long it would take for these pastoralists to recover and who would be able to recover, would "largely depend on the outcome of the 2005-2006 Gu and Deyr seasons," the FSAU report said.

The number of people requiring immediate humanitarian assistance was however starting to drop slowly in Somaliland and northern Somalia. In mid-2004, there were an estimated 58,000 people in a state of humanitarian emergency and 160,000 persons in a state of livelihood crisis in eastern Somaliland. The estimates after the Deyr rains have dropped to 52,000 and 115,000 respectively.

For the livestock trade, Somaliland's principal export, the crisis however seems to have ended with more permanent damages. The number of sheep and goats exported in 2004 is similar to that of 2003, but remains far below the numbers exported prior to the livestock ban of 1998, following an animal outbreak.

A new shift in export patterns is further set to concern Somaliland authorities. In 2005, Bosasso port exported the bulk of animals from Somalia and Somaliland, which is a shift from the pre-livestock ban time when Berbera was the main port of export. Bosasso is located in the Puntland region of Somalia - which occupies parts of the Sool and Sanaag provinces - while Berbera is Somaliland's main port.
